What is Spirulina?

Known as microalgae, Spirulina (Arthrospira Platensis) is a spiral-shaped cyanobacteria that lives in water and employs the energy of sunlight to drive photosynthesis. It is one of early life forms present on Earth for more than 3.6 billion years ago. Today it is considered by the World Health Organization as one of the most nutritious foodfor humanity. It has a high density of phytonutrients - contains a high content of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential fatty acids and antioxidants – with considerable advantages for health and physical well-being when consumed regularly.

Our spirulina grows in production pools, located inside a greenhouse, which allows the optimization of production conditions and prevents contamination. The production is natural and seasonal and takes place mainly between April and October. During the production season, we harvest spirulina every day. Spirulina is filtered and pressed, forming a biomass which will be modeled by extrusion into “spaghetti strand forms”. Then Dehydration is done at low temperature (35ºC to 40ºC), in order to keep its nutritional properties intact. Finally, we have dryed “sprinkles” of spirulina (the “sprinkles” are the image of artisanal spirulina), ready to be packaged and consumed.

The Project

Family project born of the desire to “bring life” to an old agroforestry farm located in Tomar (Portugal), contributing to honor its history and beauty and to preserve the environment and biodiversity of the place. We enjoy the natural richness of the farm and its ideal conditions for the practice of ecological activities, from which high quality natural products are born. The production of Artisanal Spirulina is our first activity. The priority is to take care of its quality in order to keep its unique nutritional properties intact. Therefore, we dehydrate it at a low temperature, obtaining 100% pure spirulina sprinkles, with mild taste and smell and crunchy texture, ideal To be incorporated in daily recipes. Tomar Natural Spirulina is produced without any additives and free from pesticides and herbicides.
